SM Olongapo, Bataan Malls hold Coastal Cleanup in celebration of World Oceans Day
“As we observe Environment Day and World Oceans Day, now is the best time to think about what we can do for the environment,” very significant words from Engr. Liza B. Silerio, Head of SM’s Program on Environment and Sustainability. “It’s never too late for all of us to make positive changes for the benefit of our planet, but to succeed, we will need to work together.” In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Olongapo Downtown and SM City Bataan conducted a simultaneous coastal cleanup at Parola, Brgy. Kalaklan and Driftwood Beach in Olongapo City and Mangrove adopted area in Brgy Pto. Rivas, Balanga City, in collaboration with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Olongapo City Agriculture and EcoTourism Office, Barangay Affairs Office, Environmental Sanitation and Management Office (ESMO), Barangay Kalaklan, Barangay Barretto and Brgy. Pto. Rivas and Tortugas, Balanga Bataan. The collective effort of SM Olongapo and Bataan malls yielded significant results as they collected a total of 1310 kilograms of cigarette butts, food wrappers, take-out containers, metal and plastic bottle caps, fishing nets, diapers, beverage bottles, and cans. This June, people around the world is celebrating two of the most important dates dedicated to the protection and conservation of the environment- World Environment Day on June 5 and World Oceans Day on June 8. As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, SM Supermalls implements regular cleanups throughout the year, and execute initiatives such as water recycling program across all SM Malls, Trash to Cash Recycling Market, Solar rooftops in several malls that promote the use of clean energy; Green Film Festival that feature documentaries about biodiversity, climate change and solid waste, offered for free to High School students.
