Kalalake National High School-SHS Conducts Filipino Reading Assessment
OLONGAPO CITY – The Senior High School of Kalalake conducted the Initial Assessment in Filipino from September 2 to September 6, 2024, using the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI). The aim of the assessment is to gauge the reading proficiency levels of students, in accordance with DepEd Order No. 308, s. 2024.
A total of 88 Grade 11 students and 111 Grade 12 students participated in this reading assessment. The assessment was carried out during the students’ free periods from 7:30 AM to 4:15 PM at the Senior High School (SHS) building. The event was coordinated by Ms. Debiemel J. Bronil, the KABASA coordinator with the help of other SHS faculty members. The materials used in the reading sessions were reviewed and prepared by Mr. Joseph E. Salazar, the former KABASA coordinator, and Ms. Lovella M. Jarobel, KNHS SHS OIC Assistant Principal
The assessment revealed that many students, particularly in Grade 12, had difficulties in reading and comprehension with Filipino texts. Some students were found to rush through the questions without properly analyzing them, which resulted in lower scores. However, there were also students who demonstrated independent reading skills, requiring little to no assistance during the activity.
In response to the challenges observed, Bronil initiated the PAIR Project (Partnership Approach In Reading) that aims to help struggling readers by pairing them with students who have better reading comprehension ski oversee the activities.
The PAIR Project was fully supported by Dr. Soledad E. Pozon, Principal IV of the Kalalake NHS recognizjng its potential to improve students’ reading and comprehension skills. (Debiemel J. Bronil)
