Subic Bay Freeport,  – They swam, they biked, they ran – from Subic Bay’s Dungaree Beach, through winding roads and highways, and down the Subic Bay Freeport’s Central Business District.

The weekend traffic here came to a stop to give way to the K-Swiss SuBIT 2012, the 19th edition of the longest running and premier standard distance triathlon in the country. This year’s international triathlon, which has been held here for the past several years, attracted a total of 800 participants – 550 in the various age categories and 250 in the Elite category with the latter triathletes pinning their hopes to qualify for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

Reaching the finish line first in the Elite Men’s category was Faquan Bai of China who clocked in at 01:50:11, followed by Benjamin Shaw of Israel and Shane Barrie of Australia at 01:50:35 and 01:52:09, respectively.

In the Elite Women’s category, Eri Kawashima of Japan took the top place at 02:06:54, while Grace Musgrove of Australia and Yi Wang of China got to the finish line for the second and third place at 02:08:16 and 02:10:46, respectively.

Organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines and presented by Century Tuna, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and Asian Cup Series event was officiated by the international technical officials under the supervision of the ITU/ Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC).

According to TRAP president Tom Carasco, the event was conducted in accordance with environmental and conservation measures of TRAP’s Green Triathlon Initiative, which was launched in January last year.

Part of the proceeds from race fees would also go to their TriGIVING program to support the development of a pool of triathletes.
