On March 2, 2012, the G4 Chess Club had another meeting with the Harbor Point Marketing Department, led by Argee Gomez, marketing manager, Mary Rose D. Lila and Nate Franco, marketing associates.

The said meeting tackled the planned monthly chess tournaments and summer chess clinic which will start on the first week of May (exact date will be announced soon and relayed to all schools in the community).

The project is aimed not only to enhance  camaraderie amongst chess enthusiasts but most important to produce future Chess Grandmasters like GM Wesley So and GM Oliver Barbos, who, at the early age of 12, earned their masters norm.

It is also geared to produce World Chess Champions like the all time famous GM James “Bobby” Fischer and GM Gary Kasparov, both who, at the age of 23 and 21, respectively, won the World Championship title.

ATTACKING CHESS – How to Start ? “I used to attack because it was the only thing I know. Now I attack because I know it works best.” – Gary Kasparov

In this article, I will endeavour to reveal the basic consideration that can be of assistance to an improving player on his road to have a successful attack.

Also, it is the purpose of this article to give more importance to the practical side of the game because it is useless to play brilliantly and then throw away a clear win because you only have less than thirty seconds left in your time to finish off your opponent.

To be able to start an attack, one must a possess wide view over the board, an imagination that matches, if not surpasses, the brilliant minds like Mikhail Tal and Bobby Fischer.

In the book “Prepare to Attack” by Gary Lane, he discussed the imperative rationale to COUNT THE PIECES.

This is the simplest way to examine the situation over the board. How many pieces are needed to carry out an attack and how many pieces can your opponent send out to defend? This is the most basic but effective way when trying to work out a plan. This is because when you cannot figure out every tactical element, it does help to increase your confidence in the knowledge that such positions tend to favour the one with the majority pieces.
