Bushfire Hits Subic Airport Perimeter

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE – Several trees were burned or damaged, and an undetermined wildlife may have perished in a bushfire that hit part of the forested perimeter of the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA) along Argonaut Highway, late this afternoon (April 15).

“I dispatched a team to the area and the fire was immediately put under control,” Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Fire Chief Ranny Magno told Subic Bay News.

A large cloud of smoke rose to over a hundred meters and was visible kilometers away, prompting many to worry and speculate about the fire that was eventually extinguished in less than an hour.

The fire did not affect airport operations, as well as equipment and property, but could have ravaged an estimated several hectares of the forest.

Magno said they will investigate the cause of the bushfire, a rare, if not an isolated occurrence in the vicinity of the airport. (LGV)
