Olongapo Students Win International Math Competition Grand Slam


Batang Gapo gets First place in International Competition – Mayor Rolen Paulino pose with the winners of the 2013 Hongkong International Mathematics Competition held in Hongkong last July 24–28, 2013. Students from Special Education Center for the Gifted(SPEDG), Wesley School and Center for Excellence in Olongapo were given Certificates of Recognition and incentives from the City Government as token of appreciation for the prestige it has brought the City.

Olongapo City – Olongapo City students scored a grand slam win after taking home 3 gold medal in the 2013 Hong Kong International Mathematics Competition held in Hong Kong last week.

Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino honored the students during the regular flag raising ceremony of the Local Government of Olongapo.

Bianca Sacramento, Grade 1 student from the Special Education Center for the Gifted (SPED) took home the gold in the Green Cup Asia Finals while Erin Noceda bagged the top spot in the King of Math Asia Finals and Asia Cup Star Math competition held in Sha Tin Wai in Hong Kong last July 24-28.

“We are very proud of you little kids, ang babata nyo pero binigyan nyo nang karangalan ang lungsod ng Olongapo,” Paulino said.  Aside from the students Paulino also congratulated their parents, teachers and coaches.  “Magagaling ang mga teacher ng mga batang ito, kaya nakuha nila ang parangal,” Paulino said.

“I support them 100%  and I commend them for  the long hours of non-stop review they have to go through to be able to compete and succeed in events like these.” Dr. Roger Nuqui, head coordinator for the students said.

Other participants who won are Bianca Marie Sacramento, Joey Emmanuel Dela Paz and Erin Christen Noceda, second prize for the Green Cup Asia Finals (Environmental Mathematics), while Maria Antonia Seva and Mikhail Rafael Miguel Yao got the third place, Keisha Lanthe Gutierez, Euan Gabriel Bautista and Hugh Angelo Sonon obtained the merit awards.

In another category, the King of Math Asia finals Hugh Angelo and Euan Gabriel Bautista placed third, Jessy Jewel Manuel Keisha Lanthe Gutierrez, Maria Antonina Anaille, Joey Emmanuel Dela Paz and Bobby Carl Mortel  got the merit award.

Overall, our Math Champs from the Philippines ranked 2nd as 1st runner-up. Other competitors include hundred of participants from China, Hongkong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia and the Philippines.
