The city government of Olongapo has received today, June 27, another “Notice of SCHEDULED Power Service Interruption” from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

According to the message dated June 26, 2013, signed by one Napoleon R. Viterbo, it is the implementation of the “Disconnection Order to Olongapo City Government” issued by PSALM (Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management), the state agency tasked to privatize the assets of state-owned National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), on June 24, 2013.

The notice of disconnection, an off-shot of Olongapo City's over P5B debt to PSALM, former NAPOCOR.

Viterbo said that power will be cut-off at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, July 3.

PSALM is trying to collect over P5 Billion in debt incurred by the city in the last 9 years, during the administration of outgoing Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr.

Vice Mayor and incoming City Mayor Rolen C. Paulino said he will exert all efforts to avert the implementation of the power cut-off and will ask for a senate investigation on  the gargantuan debt which threatens the city government’s ability to deliver basic services and very existence.

Gordon’s administration has sold the city-run Public Utilities Dept. (PUD) to CEPALCO, a power firm operating in Mindanao, for P610 M.

However, the sale’s proceeds will hardly make a dent on the P5 B debt.

City residents and businessmen are getting alarmed at the prospects of an impending disconnection of electric power supply to the city. (SBN/VVVizcocho)
